This is a basic outline of a six month Focal Point Yoga syllabus.

#1 Saturday

Provide support groups, structure, texts

HOW to be a student (begin to analyze how a class is taught when you are in a class ­ sometimes let go into experience, sometimes pay close attention to how the teacher teaches) 1 hour - Teaching Relaxation and Meditation ­ Benefits and ContraIndications, Teaching Body Scan, Visualization, Contract/Release 1 hour - how to assist in Savasana Spiritual Maturity and the Journey of Becoming a Teacher - Qualities of a teacher creating boundaries taking care of yourself as a teacher (Very Important) Co-Listening (30 Minutes) yamas and niyamas code of ethics 2 hours practice ­ pranayama ­ Dirgha, nadi Shodhana (if time, Kapalabhati, and Ujjayii)

Homework ­ learn Surya Namaskara A and B ­ be prepared to teach it!

#2 Sunday

11am-12:30pm = principles of assisting ­ creating safe and sacred space, Nurturing Touch, creating sacred space, silent demo, verbal demo, show, explain, breathe, touch (have liability waiver first, take great care), need trust and rapport, wear ankle bracelet so they hear you coming, donšt have them hold pose too long waiting for your assist, ask about physical limitations before assisting, tell them they arenšt doing it wrong, you are just helping them go deeper, encourage them to communicate with you (harder, softer, higher, lower, etc.), press into my touch, use of props (blocks, ties, sandbags, cushions, bolsters, headstand bench, chair, wall, mats, blankets, physioball ­ whatever is available to help them go deeper. Be Present. Give them a chance to do it themselves before you assist. Why assist? Safety first ­ correct knees and hips, spine, etc. Then to help them go deeper, safely, with better alignment. Standing still is an assist, partner poses are mutual assists that can also be psychotherapeutic. 12:30-2pm = Surya Namaskara A ­ practice with Partners, and then switch to teach each other Surya Namaskara B 2-2:30pm Lunch 2:30-3 = teaching Teaching Relaxation and Meditation ­ Visualization 3-4:30 ­ Stage 2/3 Yoga Practice 4:30 - 5:30 - Assisting Child Pose and Savasana. Preparation for Yoganand in 2 weeks ­ give some stage 2 and 3 info & handouts

Gods or Agricultural Society giving man time to ask the big questions? history and philosophy of Yoga ­ Krishnamacharya, Sutras, Patanjali. Sutras 1 &2. 11am-12pm = John Featherstone to teach practice of asana, savasana, pranayama, meditation, chanting, centering 12-2pm = John Featherstone ­ Patanjališs Yoga Sutras 2-2:30pm Lunch 2:30--5:30 Bethann from Washington DC flying in to teach. Skillful, experienced Kripalu and Ashtanga Instructor, healed her own body miraculously with yoga and alternative therapies, also a massage therapist. She will discuss yamas and niyamas in our lives, taking care of self as a teacher (living your yoga), massage techniques, and teach an awesome yoga class ­ she can go over time if she is able to do so! Next class ­ practice teach! Assignments will be provided to each group!

Graduation

Creating a support structure (NYA, MYA), continuing your practice at home, the business of yoga ­ useful legal documents, yoga insurance, nitty gritty questions on living the life, legalities of teaching, liability issues, marketing and promotion, how to really grow a class, practical issues. Skits and party! 1-7 Sanga! Chanting, joining as a community ­ request for graduating students to return and connect with community List of Resources to continue to learn and grow.
